Lumens measure how much light you are getting from a bulb. More lumens means it’s a brighter light; fewer lumens means it’s a dimmer light.
Lumens let you buy the amount of light you want. So when buying your new bulbs, think lumens, not watts.
The brightness, or lumen levels, of the lights in your home may vary widely, so here’s a rule of thumb:
To replace a 100 watt incandescent bulb, look for a bulb that gives you about 1600 lumens. If you want something dimmer, go for less lumens; if you prefer brighter light, look for more lumens.
Replace a 75W bulb with an energy-saving bulb that gives you about 1100 lumens
Replace a 60W bulb with an energy-saving bulb that gives you about 800 lumens
Replace a 40W bulb with an energy-saving bulb that gives you about 450 lumens.
I try to avoid artificial light whenever possible, preferring candles first and the old school incandescent bulbs after (as energy inefficient as they are!) but i break them so easily… 😥

I still try to buy the old-style light bulbs when I can. I don’t like the way that the new type have to ‘warm up’ before giving proper light. Thanks for the ‘lumens’ tips too.
Best wishes, Pete.

There are new ones now Pete that light up straight away and are as good as the old type, thank goodness, I was fed up of waiting 10 minutes to see what I was doing!

I like black and white photos! I had to resarch all about light temperature when I bought lights for my studio a while ago.
