Day 90~366

I recently shot a couple of rolls of film on my Holga, and await their return with bated breath. It’s always hit and miss as to whether the photo’s will be in focus, exposed correctly, ruined by light leaks or accidental double exposures. There isn’t much control over the Holga! So I had a little look about the whole Lomo thing, and found out the next step up from a Holga would be a Lubitel 166B TLR, which has settings for aperture and shutter speed and looks like a poor man’s Rollieflex.  As I am a poor woman, it fits in my budget very nicely, and one arrived today. It’s going to be a steep learning curve, I got a roll in and on the go but looking down into a view finder is extremely weird and I haven’t got the hang of it, also there’s a lot more thinking about aperture and shutter speed which I’m not that used to, knowing the fuji will take care of that with an auto ISO setting while I just choose the aperture.  But I’m looking forward to learning, got a notebook to check what I’m doing so I can compare them with the shots I get back and will be posting the results when I get some shots developed. A cool square 🙂

  1. Got to love the Lubitel 6X6. Hasselblad photography, on a budget. Shame about the processing costs, but the anticipation is almost worth it.
    I have to say that I am jealous. The smell of roll film, the intricacies of exposure. Back to basics photography that actually means something.

  2. I am so excited for you Fraggy. You have entered the land of the “slippery slope”. One camera leads to another and then another….I can’t wait to see your Lubitel images. I am sure you will love it once you get used to the view ♥ I use an analog light meter so never have to worry about batteries or complicated readings! I have a lot of success using the sunny 16 rules so you may want to google those as well.

    1. Yes have been googling for England Mary! Got video’s saved, sunny 16 printed out, also my fuji works as a great light meter haha til I get one sort. BTW This is all your fault hahaha!

  6. Funny you should end up with a 6×6, especially after your month of squares! I purchased a Yashica 124 but sent it back – it was beautiful to look at, but had some mechanical issues once film was loaded. Still looking for a TLR and looking forward to seeing what you do with yours.

    FYI, I have an Epson V600 which comes with frames to hold the 120 film in place. Matt Day has a great video on using it to scan 120. I pay to have my film processed for $5.00 for 120 and $4.00 for 35mm, and do the scans myself.

    Also, beware, once you get into the vintage camera bug, it is acute – aka G.A.S. (but you probably already know that.)

    1. Cheers Naomi, I’ll hold off from buying a scanner as yet, I use a very good lab for prints and they are not expensive, plus my Fuji is always going to be my main camera, well at least I think it is, so am not sure I could justify the expense yet. April is macro 🙂
